Accreditation

roc3

A renewable electricity generator must be accredited by OFGEM (www.ofgem.gov.uk) in order to participate in the NIRO and receive ROCs. Action Renewables can advise and assist generators with this process, particularly if the generator also wishes to trade ROCs with Action Renewables.

There are some fundamental requirements to receive ROCs:
A generation meter – an electricity meter which records the output of the generator. This is distinct from an export meter which records electricity going out to the grid. They may be the same meter if all electricity is exported, but if some electricity is consumed onsite, then two separate meters will be required.

Proof of the renewable energy of the fuel – certain energy sources such wind or solar energy are clearly renewable, but others such as mixed waste will have renewable fractions. Fuel sampling can be necessary for uncertain fuels.

Proof of the efficiency of the technology – some technologies are only eligible if they meet certain efficiency standards. This is particularly the case for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants. These plants will be required to meet the Quality Assurance scheme designed for CHP generators.
